In accordance with the National Core Arts Standards, students will be graded on their ability to follow the Anchor Standards of Visual arts. As in keeping with traditional art grading practices, students are not graded on their individual “skill” or “creativity” but rather on their ability to follow through and create content that is meaningful to themselves and their learning.
Creating
The student shows the ability to plan their art ahead and follow it through to completion. They fulfilled all obligations to meet the participation requirements.
Presenting
The student is able to rationalize and analyze their own creations through dialogue. This is usually done by explaining what the student believes they have learned or accomplished by completing the art on an academic level.
Responding
The student is able not only to analyze their own work, but offer valuable feedback and insight into the works of other artists or peers constructively.
Connecting
The student is able to connect with their creation on an emotional, cultural, or societal level to deepen their understanding of their own works and how their work will or will not affect how they will make art in the future. What does making art mean to them? What is their goal as an artist? Did this painting aid in their journey to fulfil their goals or standards?
In addition to National Core Art Standards, Grade 6-8 Students will be graded using the Academic Grading system of Canada. As is standard in public schooling:

Continued failure to show respect for the classroom environment, its provided materials, or the wellbeing of others may result in a failing grade and removal from the course.
See details at the bottom of each module lesson for details on each task and submission requirements.
Class Reflection (Crit Classes)
As is customary of art courses, on the due date of each assignment Art of Expression will have a classroom critique. This entire class period will be dedicated to the review and reflection of each student’s assignment. Students will be expected to bring their work to class and be able to talk about their experience making the art. Their peers in turn will offer insight and feedback about their work.
Online Hand-In and Participation Protocol
In the scenario that a student is unable to attend in-class sessions, the material can be completed online. Please email the instructor to specify for special arrangements. A Zoom call will be created for in-class sessions to enable participation as needed.
Painting Assignments will need to be photographed and sent to the instructor’s email: teachermail@example.com
